Patterns

The Malhar eco-village’s fifth community, Patterns, maintained the aesthetic traditions of the development. The streets in Patterns were friendly and wound leisurely around cluster parks, green gardens, and community areas. The homes had open spaces that seamlessly flowed into lavish courtyards, gardens, verandahs, and balconies. These open spaces blended in with the streets, parks, and opened out to the playfield and jogging trail surrounding the neighborhood. The design departures that had become characteristic of the Malhar development were once again present in Patterns.

Home-Types

The Open Plan Home

The Open Plan Home

Cleverly designed spaces with minimal or no walls at all seem to flow seamlessly from the entrance verandah, through the living and dining areas to the rear verandah and into the rear garden. This creates a sense of spaciousness in an otherwise compact plan, and various points within the home allow for the appreciation of the beauty of the outdoors. The emphasis on the front or rear garden will be decided by the position of the plot in the layout and proximity to parks.

The Garden Courtyard Home

The Garden Courtyard Home

These homes have walled gardens that are open to the sky, but are an extension to the built spaces of the house, like the aangans of the old traditional houses. The gardens are enveloped on two or three sides by verandahs and windows that overlook them, including those of the floor above. This way, the main areas within the home are oriented to this garden. They retain a vibrant connection to the rest of the community through the front verandah that opens out to the street, but are more private than the homes in Patterns.

The Corner Home

The Corner Home

These homes, as the name suggests, occupy the corners of the layout. They have larger open spaces within the plot, affording more privacy than the others. They may feature an L-shaped yard, a spacious backyard, or an entrance court with a large backyard. They are truly unique in character and respond to the location and profile of their sites.

The Cluster Home

The Cluster Home

The location of these homes is internal to the cluster and takes advantage of the cluster park they look out to. The homes have expansive gardens facing the park with a gentle foliage boundary that merges into them. The open space of the park visually merges with the private gardens to give the homes the feel of a larger green area. At the same time, the gardens are private from the cluster park, but enjoy the intimacy of being next to one. Nothing beats the unending green vistas afforded by the cluster homes, which will share common walls along an L shape, unlike the other homes in the layout.
